Education: Has been my life's work. Every child deserves the chance to go to a great school.
As the Executive Director of a private school that has been accepting scholarship students for over 20 years, I’ve seen firsthand the benefits of School Choice.
Every child is unique in physical appearance, personality and learning style. For too long, we have expected all students to learn the same way. We are making progress, but have a long way to go. Allowing schools to be unique and different ensures that children have the opportunity to find a school that suits their needs. Parents know what is best for their child and they should have the right to choose a school that is best whether that be public, private, charter or home school.
In a Feb. 2019 Watchdog.com article by John Haughey, he said, “Florida Tax Credit (FTC) Scholarship students enrolled in private schools are more likely to matriculate to four-year colleges and obtain bachelor’s degrees than public school district students, according to an Urban Institute study released this week.
The study documents that lower-income, mostly minority students using Florida’s school choice scholarship program – the largest in the nation – to attend private schools are 43 percent more likely to enroll in four-year colleges than students in public schools, and 20 percent more likely to earn bachelor’s degrees.
Outcomes are “even stronger for students who use the scholarship four or more years,” according to Step Up For Students Vice President for Policy & Public Affairs Jon East. “Those students are up to 99 percent more likely to attend a four-year college than their public school peers, and up to 45 percent more likely to earn bachelor’s degrees.”
As your Senator, I will work to see that FTC Scholarships and other School Choice Scholarships continue to be funded and the wait lists eliminated.
